The Korean word 인사 translates to bowing or greeting. An act similar to shaking hands, it is the formal way to introduce oneself. It is showing courtesy when meeting someone or saying goodbye, expressing gratitude. This act can range from a simple lowering of the head, to bowing your upper body to become parallel to the floor, to kneeling on the floor to make your forehead touch the ground.

I simplify the act of bowing on canvas by reducing the motions of the form. I repeat this gesture over and over again. I slow down the act of bowing to investigate what this customary, ritual act means.

The meaning behind a bow can get lost in its repetitiveness. I discover what it truly means to bow. I see you, I lean into you, I can’t see you for a second but I trust you will be there when I look up. I can’t see how you look at me while I expose the back of my head to you, showing my vulnerability and my trust.
